I join the people of God of the Diocese of Balanga as you welcome your new shepherd—Bishop Socrates B. Villegas. This occasion is a very historic moment for the equally historic province of Bataan.

Bishop Soc comes as a shepherd. Like Jesus, the Good Shepherd, he comes with direction, compassion and inspiration. He will lead you to a renewed vision of the Church. He will venture forth with you so that the Good News of Jesus Christ may be proclaimed with much vigor and intensity. A true leader enables his flock to discern the right horizon. Secondly, Bishop Soc brings with him the compassion of the Lord. He serves not as a ruler on an ivory tower, totally distant to daily realities. He serves in the name of Jesus’ love. He is a shepherd with a selfless love and he will teach you to share that love with one another. He will not just preach reconciliation and unity, he will be the embodiment of these virtues in your midst. Lastly, Bishop Soc will bring inspiration. Every bishop is sent by the Spirit of God to His people. Your new bishop will animate you as you journey and serve together. He will help you find energy and strength as you respond to the summons of Jesus to carry the cross daily and follow Him. Bishop Soc will inspire you not just in the celebration of the sacraments and preaching of the word, but most especially, He will inspire you through his deeds. He will share with you the power coming from the Holy Spirit.

I am very confident that the Diocese of Balanga will move forward steadily with Bishop Soc’s leadership. Accept my prayers and blessings. Accpet the joy of Manila in offering this gift to the Church and to God.
