What a gift from the Lord!

I am sure this is the response of the clergy, religious and lay faithful of the Diocese of Balanga. You are indeed blessed to receive a new shepherd, a new prophet and a new priest—Bishop Socrates B. Villegas. He is your new bishop. He is your new sojourner and friend.

I can say these things because I have been blessed with Bishop Soc’s love and service from the time he was ordained a priest in 1985. I know him as a father knows his son. I am a witness to his dedication and courage. But above all, I have seen his personal communion with God. His deep spirituality is the foundation of his ministry. I believe this is the precious gift that Bishop Soc will share with you.

Our universal vocation is holiness. We are all called to become saints. It is the bishop’s primary duty to lead his people to the path of sanctity. Every project, activity or pastoral plan is secondary to holiness. Our communion with God is the wellspring from which we will draw out our life, strength and love. If our personal intimacy with God is the source of our plans and action, then we will bear much fruit—fruit that will endure forever.

To the beloved people of Balanga—love and pray for Bishop Soc. He needs them now more than ever. He is a gift of God. He is the gift of the local Church of Manila to you. He is my gift to you as well. I am at peace because I know he is in good hands.

May the Lord bless you always and forever!
