Serviam Concert: Music Highlights Cardinal Sin’s
Mission
"Serviam,"
a musical presentation highlighting the spirit of service
that has been the hallmark of Jaime L. Cardinal Sin’s
life, will be mounted at the Araneta Colisem on August 27.
The concert’s title, which translates to “I will serve,”
is the motto of His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin who celebrates his 75th
birth anniversary on August 31, four days after the concert. The concert
is being staged by the Archdiocese of Manila with Monsignor Gerardo Santos
as head of the organizing committee.
There will be three showings on that day: 10 a.m. which will be free
for public school children and their catechists; 2 p.m. for
students of private Catholic schools; and the gala performance
at 7 p.m. for parishes, lay organizations, and other guests.
Msgr. Santos has stressed that the concert is aimed at highlighting
Cardinal Sin’s vision for the Filipino people. “During
People Power I, Cardinal Sin made a call for people to come
to EDSA citing the emergence of a new Filipino self with a
higher level of reflective power and a greater impulse that
moves forward in the direction of freedom, truth and justice.
It is this dream for the country and the work he has done
fulfilling that dream which we are highlighting,” he
explains.
Bishop Socrates B. Villegas, auxiliary bishop of Manila, and prime mover
of the concert says that the concert is an event for the Catholic faithful
to celebrate, not so much Cardinal Sin’s birthday, but rather what
he has been working and living for all these years.
The concert will feature priests, nuns, and seminarians of the Archdiocese
of Manila in special numbers. A group of bishops is also expected to render
their own presentation. Top local entertainers will also grace the show
that includes talents from various Catholic schools and universities.
Major presentors of the concert are PLDT and Smart Communication.
Serviam is being staged to help four of Cardinal Sin’s favorite
beneficiaries. Caritas Manila, the youth, seminarians and catechists.
Overall director for the concert is Leo Rialp with Fr. Erick Santos,
parish priest of Sto. Nino, Tondo, as writer.
