“Salamat sa Diyos, Katekista ka!”, a powerful message addressed to all catechists who attended the 1st General Assembly of the National Association of Catechists in the Philippines (NAC-PHIL) held at Sienna Hall, Sienna College in Quezon City last July 17, 2019.

Most Rev. Roberto C. Mallari, D.D., the re-elected chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education led the said assembly. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the significant role of the Catechists in strengthening the faith of the people under their care. He added that objectively, the most dynamic workers of the Church are the catechists, somebody who can organize and do the different tasks needed by the Church. He deeply expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Church for the catechists’ love for their vocation and notable work in the life of the Church.

Fr. Ernie De Leon, Executive Secretary of ECCCE gave his keynote address focusing on the theme: “Catechists: Empowering the Youth for a Synodal Church”. Fr. Ernie developed the theme emphasizing the role of the catechists as youth ministers. He explained that all the efforts of the catechists in ministering the youth is towards building a “Synodal Church” which is one of Pope Francis’ goals; to build a democratic Church.

Dr. Clarence Batan of UST Research Team presented the result of the study that investigated the current state of catechetical ministry in the Philippines from the perspectives of Filipino catechists and catechetical leaders. The presentation highlighted the value and importance of the catechetical ministry and its catechist, even more now when the faith is being attacked. Dr. Batan emphasized in his presentation that “Kayamanan ng Simbahan ang mga Katekista”.

Dr. Erickson Javier of Pasig Catholic College did the presentation of the Concept of the National Association of the Catechists of the Philippines (NAC-PHIL) followed by the breakup groups by Ecclesiastical Province. The group sharing was focused on the three questions formulated by the organizer, which was about the catechetical best practices implemented by each province. After the lunch break, big group sharing was done.

The gathering was concluded with the celebration of the Eucharist presided over by the ECCCE chairperson. Before the blessing, the newly organized ADHOC committee composed of a representative from different Catechetical Ecclesiastical Provinces was presented to the assembly. They will be responsible for coming up programs for NAC-PHIL.
