LAY LITURGICAL COMMISSION |
(Lectors and Special Ministers of Holy Communion)
The nature of liturgical celebrations requires the office of ministers both ordained
and lay. The more fully we are conscious of the meaning of each part
of the liturgy, the more do we realize the need for diversified functions.
The ministry of lectors and special ministers of holy
communion are entrusted to lay persons who are deputed by the pastor
or religious superior:
- the ministry of reading the word of God in liturgical assembly
is exercised by a group of men and women chosen for the role;
- the ministry of helping out in distributing holy communion
and communion to sick is reserved to men only (up to this present time)
According to Ministeriam Quedam the function proper to the lector “is
to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, except the gospel in the
Mass and other liturgical ceclebrations.”
In the absence of the instituted acolyte, other lay persons (particularly men),
deputed by the pastor for a particular period assist as special ministers
of holy communion. They help in the distribution when there are a big
number of communicants, when the ordinary minister is incapacitated to
do it. They may also bring communion to the sick on Sundays, when the
sick person cannot make it to the Sunday assembly.
COMMISSION ON ALTAR SERVERS –
Servers are really ministers. The name “server”
clearly points out what they do at Mass: serve God and his people by helping
the priest and his fellow worshippers to praise God as well as they can.
COMMISSION ON LITURGICAL ENVIRONMENT
– The Church has a long tradition for the commissioning
art work and the building of magnificent cathedrals and churches for
the worship of God. The commission sees to it that worship space is created
and that it conveys both mystery and hospitality. It sees to it that
the worship space be so arranged so as to foster active participation
and involvement of all. It also requires that the liturgical space provide
for movement, unity, visibility, audibility, flexibility and simplicity.
COMMISSION ON MUSIC IN LITURGY -
The ministry exercise a liturgical function in the assembly, as they
add beauty and solemnity to the celebration. Its primary task is to enable
the assembly to pray and sing and celebrate well.
COMMISSION ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH LITURGY – From the moment of baptism, every faithful has a place in the
assembly. In all liturgical celebrations active, conscious and full participation
of the assembly is primary. Thus, like its master, the church welcomes
children and involves them to active participation. While not creating
a new rite when children are in the assembly, there are some parts in
the liturgy that an be adapted in order to give attention to them.
COMMISSION ON GREETERS AND COLLECTORS
– They are popularly known as ushers and collectors.
Their role is to welcome people, especially guests or strangers, at the
door, provide them with books and aids, and help them to their place.
They also assist members of the assembly who become ill or may need special
assistance. Ushers may help with the collection and organizing the offertory
procession. This ministry demands a welcoming or pleasing personality,
practical sense and presence of mind.
