Brief History
The idea and the spirit behind Bahay-Pari came out of
the fatherly love and concern of His Eminence Jaime Cardinal L. Sin, Archbishop
of Manila, to the priests of the Archdiocese.
Located within the San Carlos Pastoral Formation Complex in
EDSA, Guadalupe, Makati City, Bahay-Pari’s construction was supervised
by Fr. Cesar Buhat, Assistant Treasurer of the Archdiocese. It was blessed
and inaugurated on December 27, 1990 by the then Papal Nuncio to the Philippines,
His Excellency, the late Gian Vincencio Moreni. However, it was only
in August 5, 1991 when His Eminence formally opened the house and with
it was born the Ministry for the Renewal of Priests (MRP) with Msgr. Jose
“Chito” Bernardo, Jr. as the Director.
Although originally perceived mainly as a retirement home for
old and retired priests of the Archdiocese, Bahay-Parihas become both
a renewal center and a recreational house for priests.
As a renewal center, it has become the seat for the renewal
and on-going formation programs for priests. It can also be a place for
prayer and solitude with the fully air-conditioned Chapel and a meditation
garden.
As a recreational house, Bahay-Pari offers facilities for relaxation
and recreation. It has a big swimming pool, a jacuzzi, a steam and a
sauna bath, air-conditioned TV and audio room, sports and gym equipment
like billiards, thread mill and weights. It has 60 single-occupancy rooms
of which 32 are air-conditioned while the rest have electric fans. All
these rooms have their own toilet and bath.
OBJECTIVES AND FUNCTIONS
As a renewal center, Bahay-Pari aims:
- To pursue the over-all and total integration of the priest in his
life and ministry;
- To enhance his professional-pastoral competence and his zealous commitment
in the service of the Church; and
- To promote and foster presbyteral fraternity and unity.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES
The calendar of Bahay-Pariand the Ministry for the Renewal
of Priests includes a year-round on-going formation program that has developed
and evolved since 1992. While before, the on-going formation programs
were focussed at Bahay-Pari, during the past three years it has become
concentrated to different ecclesiastical districts.
Aside from the main on-going formation program,Bahay-Pari and
the Ministry for the Renewal of priests take care of other major activities,
like the regular clergy recollection, lent and advent clergy recollections,
annual clergy retreat, young clergy renewal program, and the guest-priests’
renewal program.
