San Carlos Seminary is the official seminary of the Archdiocese of Manila.
It accepts not only seminarians for the Archdiocese of Manila but also
seminarians for other dioceses, especially for the suffragan
dioceses of Manila.
San Carlos Seminary has three departments: Juniorate, Philosophy, and Theology.
The Juniorate Department is
composed of two-year levels: the Formation Year (those who graduated from
the secondary level outside the minor seminary system) and Philosophy
1 (those who finished the Formation Year and those who graduated from
the minor seminary).
The Philosophy Department is composed
of three-year levels: Philosophy 2,3, and 4.
The Theology Department is composed
of five-year levels: Theology 1, 2, PSIY, 3 and 4. PSIY is
the pastoral spiritual integration year. It is a non-academic
year during which the seminarians live as a group apart from
theology 1, 2, 3, and 4. They are exposed to the urban and
the rural poor, take clinical pastoral education either in
a community and hospital, give recollection or retreat to
students, and end up with a 30- day retreat. The fourth year
theologians end the school year with a diaconal ordination
and have six months of diaconal ministry before the presbyteral
ordination. Each department has a Director (Prefect of Discipline), a Head Spiritual Director, an Associate Spiritual Director and a Pastoral Director. The Theology Department has its own Dean of Studies, while the Philosophy and Juniorate Department have the same Dean of Studies.
San Carlos Seminary is presently located in a five-hectare
lot in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati City, along the Epifanio De Los Santos
Avenue (EDSA).
Since 1973 San Carlos Seminary is administered by the diocesan
clergy. Prior to this year, it was administered by the CICM Fathers.
