Ministry for Youth Affairs
VISION
A witnessing community of youth organizations and movements called
by Christ in the Church for the transformation of society.
MISSION
We, the youth organizations and movements of the Archdiocese
of Manila,
united in the Spirit of Christ, commit ourselves to actively
pursue a holistic
approach to youth ministry, sharing abilities, resources
and time at the
service of the Church and for the transformation of society.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
1985
February 17, 1985 when his Eminence Jaime Cardinal L. Sin instituted
the Archdiocesan Youth Council - AYC of the Archdiocese of Manila.
1997
From the AYC came the MYA or the Ministry for Youth Affairs of
the Archdiocese of Manila, a more consolidated and organized ministry
for the young people. MYA decided to divide the work of the ministry
into sectors. They have established the structures for the Parish
Youth Ministry, Campus Ministry and for the Dormitory Ministry as
the sectors.
Different youth organizations and movements in the Archdiocese
that are used to be part of the AYC were left without direct coordinating
structures at the Archdiocesan level. This challenge remains for
some period because of the consideration that these organizations
and movements in the Archdiocese have their own different charisms
and areas of apostolate.
It is from this reality that the Archdiocesan Youth Organizations
and Movements (AYOM) was created as another sector of the MYA.
It was October 1997 when Bp. Soc Villegas, still a Monsignor then,
called a meeting for all the head of different organizations and
movements in the Archdiocese. The meeting was held in Villa San
Miguel. In the meeting, Bp. Soc explained and presented MYA, its
new structure, way of working and the whole program of the Ministry.
He re-iterated the need to set-up a structure that will coordinate
the work and program of the Ministry in the levels of the different
youth organizations and movements. In that very first meeting, the
idea was unanimously approved and accepted by the body.
After several meetings, the name AYOM or the Archdiocesan
Youth Organizations and Movements came. AYOM became the
new sector under Ministry for Youth Affairs. Mel Andres, Assistant
Program Coordinator of the
MYA at that time was appointed by the Archdiocese to lead AYOM.
He was the very first AYOM Coordinator.
1998
It took several meetings before the AYOM vision-mission-goal (VMG)
were concretized and agreed upon. Endless debates and many questions
were raised in the process. To finally concretize the vision-mission-goal,
a committee was set-up for this purpose. The committee was tasked
to put all the proposals coming from different organizations and
movements altogether and put it into one vision-mission-goal statement.
The committee did a great job. They came up with such a great
vision-mission-goal for AYOM. But the story doesn’t end there.
After the vision-mission-goal was presented to the body for approval,
strong objections were raised by few organizations particularly
in the vision statement. They moved to remove the phrase “transformation
of society” in the vision, which triggered a very fruitful
and colorful debate among the organizations and movements present
in the meeting. After the memorable debate, the body just decided
to have an election to approve or disapprove the vision-mission-goal
presented. Fortunately, more than majority of the organizations
and movements present in that meeting approved the vision-mission-goal
we now have in AYOM.
After the vision-mission-goal, AYOM discussed the need to set-up
the structure of AYOM, a committee or a body that coordinated the
work. The name Coordinating Board was decided and agreed upon in
the meeting. Election of the other members of the Coordinating Board
came next.
AYOM had a wonderful first year and it was also a busy and active
year for AYOM. AYOM were able to organize several forums and discussions
on
social issues concerning young people that were participated actively
by many young people. AYOM has been very active in its participation
and support to other programs and activities organized by the Archdiocese.
Member organizations and movements were very committed to work and
share their own charisms with others.
In this very first year of AYOM, it was a year of learnings and
discovery for AYOM. A year of trying to organize things, a year
of trial and error and a year of a long journey that awaits AYOM
in the coming years.
1999
AYOM in full force were present during the Silver Anniversary
Concert for Cardinal Sin held March 13, 1999.
AYOM had its very first Convention held May 20-23, 1999 at St.
Michael’s Retreat House in Antipolo.
Mr. Mel Andres appointment as AYOM Coordinator ended October 1999
but continued to work until December. Election process for the new
Coordinating Board started during this period.
2000 – The New Millennium
As the new millennium starts, a new life for AYOM started.
On AYOM’s very first meeting for the new millennium, January 2000,
Bp. Soc Villegas welcomed the year with the appointment of Ms. Gigi
M. Tupas from CYA as the new AYOM Coordinator.
And on March 2000, election for the other member of the Board
took place. Mr. Willy Gabriel from AP Youth was elected Assistant
Coordinator, Mr. Joel Reginales from SCA-PHS was elected Secretary,
Mr. Allan Fariñas from AMEN was elected Treasurer and Mr. Ronn Arago
from YCW was elected Auditor.
