ARCHDIOCESE OF MANILA CELEBRATES EARTH DAY

The Archdiocese of Manila celebrates Earth Day this year with the theme, “Reform our Lives..Save the Earth!” According to the Archdiocese’s Ecology Desk, the celebration is a call to every Filipino to examine their lifestyle, recognize its impacts on God’s creation and resolve to work for its protection and  thus, lessen the destructive impacts of global warming and climate change.

As a tradition, the Archdiocese of Manila will have an extended earth day celebration that will start on April 19 and end on the 27th.

In Free Earth Day Concert
by Jude Bautista ( our volunteer- he already sent this to the Manila Times and Sunday Inquirer)

Musicians known for their dedication to the environment will be celebrating Earth Day via a free concert on April 19, 2008 at the Rajah Sulayman Park at 6pm.  Dubbed as 'Gabi Ng Parangal Para Kay Inang Kalikasan' is initiated by the Archdiocese of Manila Ecology Desk. The celebration will include an Environmental Trade Fair, tree planting activities, On the Spot Painting Contests and musical plays.

The Earth Day concert is just the beginning of a week long celebration from April 19-27. Another Earth Hour is scheduled on April 22, 2008 from 8-9pm. As in the earlier Earth Hour marked on March 29, 2008, everyone is once again urged to turn off lights and electrical appliances for one hour to call attention and awareness of the need to save energy and prevent tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal B. Rosales in a statement said, "It is our vision in the Archdiocese of Manila to be a community of persons… with fullness of life. That vision begins now as we speak. Our actions towards the protection and care of our environment, the beautiful creation that God has given us, will show how we tread the path towards attaining and living our vision." Cardinal Rosales supports cause for the preservation, protection and care of the environment and the eco-system.

Cradinal Rosales organized the Archdiocese of Manila Ecology Desk in 2005, whose chief task is the education of the flock on the environment. Fr. Benny Tuazon is the director of Ecology Desk. According to him the number one problem is waste management. The desk helps educate and provide training in schools and other organizations and has created its own module for this purpose. Lou Arsenio, Coordinator of the Desk said " We also decided to organize the waste pickers who work in Smokey Mountain. Now they help us as Eco Aid, in a company we established for them called Kabalikasang Samahan Inc". She cited the College Of St. Benilde as being very conscientious in its waste management program. The school has also provided the Desk with material and financial assistance for its programs.
