Caritas Manila Launches Relief Assistance Program

Caritas Manila  launched CARITAS DAMAYAN, the new Relief Assistance Program of the Church last July 31, 2012 at the Arzobispado de Manila.

Present during the launch were Pasig Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara, Novaliches Bishop Antonio Tobias and the officers and staff of Caritas Manila led by its director Fr. Anton Pascual. Earlier the program was introduced to Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Tagle, Manila suffragan bishops and the members of the Board of Trustees of Caritas Manila.

The program through its motto, “Daig ng Maagap ang SAKUNA”, emphasizes disaster preparedness for responsible, rapid and comprehensive disaster response capabilities in various vulnerable areas.

Caritas Damayan states its objectives as:

1. To generate enough donations for emergency response equipment like food, water and personal hygiene items.
2. To serve as on hand stocks in responding to the needs of affected families from minor/major disasters/hazards.
3. To immediately respond to the needs of the disaster/hazard affected parishes within the vicariate.

To achieve this Caritas Damayan asks all parishioners to offer in-kind donations every first Sunday of the month starting July to December, 2012. Through this system the program aims to standardize the effort of the Archdiocese of Manila and its suffragan dioceses in the National Capital Region.

The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Program of Caritas Manila were able to assist 18,793 affected families nationwide who have suffered from calamities by providing emergency relief assistance.
