Three New Dioceses Sets Rites of Liturgical Reception,
Canonical Possession

The three new dioceses that had been carved out of the Archdiocese of Manila will be formally erected in rites known as liturgical reception and canonical possession begins on

The canonical possession and the liturgical reception of the Diocese of Pasig and its first bishop, Most Rev. Francisco C. San Diego will be held on August 21 at 9 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Pasig, Plaza Rizal, Barangay Malinao, Pasig City.

While for the newly created Diocese of Kalookan and its new bishop, Most Rev. Deogracias S. Iñiguez, this will be held at 9 a.m. on August 22 at the Cathedral of San Roque, A. Mabini St., Kalookan City.

The last to hold these rites will be the Diocese of Cubao in Quezon City with Most Rev. Honesto Ongtioco as first bishop, on August 28 at 9 a.m.

Jaime L. Cardinal Sin, Archbishop of Manila, will preside at the solemn rites of reception and canonical possession for the three dioceses.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is expected to attend at the rites in the three new dioceses. She was also present at the canonical possessions of the new dioceses of Novaliches and Parañaque last year.

It must be remembered that the creation of the new dioceses was announced by the Holy Father Pope John Paul II at the Vatican and by Cardinal Sin in Manila during the archdiocese’s celebration of Pope’s Day on June 28, 2003 at the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Makati City. Late last year the Dioceses of Novaliches and Paranaque were established.

The bishops of the new dioceses were formerly ordinaries of other dioceses: Bishop Honesto Ongtioco was bishop Balanga, Bataan; Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez was y bishop of Iba, Zambales, while Bishop Francisco San Diego was bishop of San Pablo, Laguna.

During that time, the Holy Father also announced the appointment of Most Rev. Rolando Tria Tirona, OCD, then bishop of Malolos, as Bishop Prelate of Infanta. He will be formally installed in Infanta on August 27.
