Baptism is our Rebirth to Immortality

“A new life which is different from the natural life that is in us because a natural life that is in us will come to an end but the supernatural life God’s divine life that comes into us through the water of Baptism will make us live forever and this is the heart of our Catholic Faith eternal life from the water of baptism that comes into us.”

This was the Apostolic Nuncio, Most Rev. Charles John Brown, D.D., explained the Sacrament of Baptism in his homily during the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord at the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene or Quiapo Church last January 10, 2021.

The Nuncio reminded the faithful how the Holy Spirit as the Lord and the giver of life, is received in and through Jesus, the Black Nazarene. He also expounded on the difference between supernatural life or divine life and natural life saying that natural life is all the living things on this planet while supernatural life is the ones given to us in Jesus by the Holy Spirit.

Archbishop Brown emphasized how the Spirit, water, and blood are interconnected.

“Blood is the carrier of life. Spirit is necessary for life. Water is essential for life. So these things even on the natural level are talking to us about life,” he said.

Through the water of Baptism, according to the Nuncio, each Catholic has been born again in God’s life. Baptism signifies the rebirth of the divine life.

The Archbishop said that the new life received in baptism is nourished through the sacraments of confirmation and the eucharist. Confirmation, “is the sacrament of the spirit of the breath of Jesus” and the Eucharist, “is the sacrament of the blood of Jesus”.

“Let’s ask him for the grace to allow his life to change us because His new life in which we have been born again makes us live in a new way,” he said. (Fatima Llanza/RCAM-AOC)
